Description

French Toast is a classic breakfast dish made with slices of bread soaked in a rich, custardy mixture of eggs, milk, and warm spices, then pan-fried to golden perfection. This simple yet indulgent dish is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect with maple syrup, fresh fruits, or powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche, challah, or French bread)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • Maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  2. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter to coat the surface.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated but not oversaturated.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Remove from heat and serve warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Use stale or day-old bread for the best texture, as it absorbs the custard without becoming too soggy.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less sugar to the batter.
  • For extra richness, substitute heavy cream for half of the milk.
  • Enhance the flavor with a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of orange zest.
  • French Toast can be kept warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while preparing multiple batches.
